I made this 25 Block T Shirt Blanket entirely out of nylon sports jerseys. They belonged to a young man who played lacrosse and football, as far as I can tell! I am often asked if I can use jerseys and the answer is yes. Sometimes I have to interface the jersey if it is a fine mesh. Other times I have to sew a backing to it, if the jersey is a tank-style and doesn’t fit into the block.
The 25-block requires double the backing fabric. In this case, I used a sweatshirt fleece and created a mock binding with the backing fabric. I really liked the effect.
I also added on several of the student’s letters to the blanket.

How did you quilt this? It looks super heavy. Wonder what his future wife will say?
Hi! Love the quilt 🙂 I am currently working on one made from Jerseys. I was concerned because they all have tiny holes/mesh (some holes bigger than others). You just used interfacing? Which I assume you can see through the holes? Just curious. I’m not sure how to go about this with the holes. Any insight you could provide would be much appreciated :)… Mike.
I usually interface it with white or black interfacing – usually the ones for knits. Sometimes I just cut two layers of the mesh – just like you would find on the jersey. Or underlay it with any of the other fabrics I am cutting up. A lot of times they are tanks anyway so I have to stitch them down to a square piece of fabric. They are stronger than you think!
How do you quilt the mesh jersey once it’s basted? Do you quilt on top of it?
