I started making headbands when my girls were younger as a “practical, yet pretty” way to keep hair out of their faces. I added them to my Etsy shop and they have always been popular. Although they are not the main emphasis of my shop, I can’t let pretty fabric go unused. (It’s a sickness.) So fabric that starts in pretty folded piles becomes quilts or dresses or totes, and then becomes headbands, and now – even the smallest of scraps are being sewn into lanyards. (Mainly be Annie – more of that on a future post.)
It takes a lot of time to photograph products for an Etsy shop. There have been interesting discussions on the Etsy forums about whether or not to use live models for clothing items for sale. I don’t think this would bother me, but there are some people who do not like to see items on real heads. So given this feedback and the amount of time to photo products, I resorted to using a Styrofoam head to model the headbands.
Then I received feedback that customers would like to see the headbands on a real head.
So I dragged Annie out for a photo shoot and now I can link this post to my listings.
I made bandana headbands for the girls when they were younger because I loved their old-fashioned look. When I was a girl I would fold a bandana into a triangle and tie it in a knot under my hair. There was always a bulky knot under my hair. The elastic eliminates the knot! Simply pull it on like a headband.
Even though these bandana headbands were designed for sweet tweens to adults, given the right twist, they can even be worn with a little attitude.

I really like your bandana headbands. What a good idea to use elastic. When I was a girl I used to tie a triangle bandana under my hair, too.
Off to look at your Etsy shop. Happy new year, Jane!
They look so comfy! I’ve found that plastic headbands can pinch my head and give me a headache!
Very nice pictures and fabrics. Hope you have a Happy New Year Jane!
Love the pictures! I like using a human model, too. Looks great and the headbands are pretty, too. 🙂
