What do you call a quilt made from dance costumes? A fringe movement! My client sent me 24 costumes that belonged to her now-27-year-old daughter. I used 20 of them to create this quilt blanket.
Each block was underlined in a cotton fabric to add stability. the framing fabric is a black cotton with a grey swirl, which reflects the idea of motion. The backing is a fabulously soft minky cuddle hide.
My client wanted to preserve as many details as possible. So I tried to show the shape of the bodice or the lace covering and kept the fringe free so it could dangle.
In all, quite a labor of love, but a fun result!
Im looking for a pattern to make this for my daughter. I love tp quilt so would like to make this myself. Wondering if you could help.
My friend would like me to make her daughter’s dance costumes into a quilt like this. Do you have any helpful suggestions on doing this
I wasn’t sure if I could interface the costumes, so I chose to sew them to cotton fabric squares. You have to be careful with sequins and beads. Sometimes you have to unstring them and then make sure they are secured because often the beads are connected on one long thread. I tried to keep some of the fringe loose if it was a main part of the costume.
I am being asked to make a dance costume quilt. How challenging are the sequins?
Did you do any quilting on your quilt?
I only stitch at the intersections or tacked down anything that might have been heavy/pulling. As far as the sequins, I recall being able to stitch through them, although I tried to remove them if I could. Beading was the bigger problem. You have to remove those from the seams and then stitch down the threads holding them. I have decided to no longer make quilts using these things because it made a mess of my sewing room and my machine.
