sweater clutch

I had the honor of creating two special memory items using a sweater and turkey shirt that belonged to my customer’s grandfather. She wanted a cowl and clutch like the ones I had previously made.

We worked back and forth on ideas and settled on using the top portion of the sweater for the clutch and the bottom portion for the cowl. She wanted a wide cowl, so I used the bottom portion of the sweater and lined it with the turkey shirt fabric.

The cowl measures about 10″ x 21″ when laid flat.

My customer was very specific on various details. I removed the Izod label and sewed it onto the cowl.

The clutch measures about 6″ x 11.5″. I used the “V” as the central part of the design and was sure to get the crocodile on, too. I backed the “V” with another piece of sweater fabric.

The purse tassel is made using old shoe tassels.

I lightly interfaced the sweater fabric and used a heavier, sew-in interfacing for the lining to give the clutch body. I used the turkey fabric for lining and designed it so that the shirt pocket could function as a pocket in the clutch purse.

I was so happy to work on this project!  My customer wrote me the nicest message when she received it. She also wrote this on my Facebook page:

Jane- I opened my package from you last night and wanted to post on here for everyone to see…the clutch and cowl you made for me out of my grandfather’s alligator sweater, turkey print button-down shirt and leather tassel from his shoe are absolutely amazing!!! I couldn’t have imagined them turning out any better. I appreciate all the time and thought you put into them and that you even took the time to call me on the phone to discuss my ‘vision.’ I am so thankful I found you on etsy and will surely be in touch again soon. You rock!
